Creating Daily Life! A Decade in Review by Corporate Museums:1955-1964
January 18, – March 23, 2025
The 30s of the Showa era (1955-64) were a time during which the foundations of daily life that continue to this day were built. Relying on electrical appliances to do laundry and cook rice. Commuting by train from a suburban home to the city center. Having a day off each week to enjoy a movie, shop at a department store, eat out, travel, and more. These ways of urban life, now completely commonplace, spread to the general public. Other aspects of one's lifestyle that became popular during this time were wide-ranging - including buying seasonings like salt in packages with standard volumes, using detergent for washing dishes and general cleaning, working while paying attention to the time using a watch, smoking while doing desk work, and saving part of one's salary in a savings account.
In the 1950s and 1960s, shortages of resources caused by World War Second were being gradually alleviated, but many people still struggled to make ends meet. Companies grew by offering products and services which lightened the burden of housework, or provided energy and peace of mind.
With joint supervision by the Sumida Corporate Museum Association, which was established in 2016, this exhibition displays items and advertisements from a variety of companies which supported life in the 1950s and 1960s as it takes a look back on a decade full of change.
Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the organizations and individuals who provided their support and cooperation in making this exhibition possible.
