Black lacquered portable tobacco tray with clematis pattern in maki-e

Date | : | Edo period(early 17th century) |
Thought to be from the early 17th century, this is the oldest tobacco tray in the Museum’s possession. The maki-e clematis design on the upper surface of the tray is expressed using the Kodaiji maki-e technique, which flourished at the beginning of the 17th century.
