Snuff Containers: Small Containers That Were a Source of Fascination
September 21, – December 22, 2024
When people think of tobacco, many may picture smoking methods such as the use of pipes, kiseru, or cigarettes. However, there is also the enjoyment of snuff tobacco. Snuff is a way to enjoy tobacco by inhaling powdered tobacco leaves directly through the nose. Originally, snuff was a custom of the indigenous people of the Americas. Still, after the Age of Exploration, it spread to Europe and later to various countries in Asia, including China.
The containers used to store and carry snuff are called "snuff containers" and are made from a variety of materials, including metal, wood, glass, and precious stones. There are also several different types of containers, the most common being the "snuff box" and the "snuff bottle." Snuff boxes, mainly used in Europe are box-shaped, while snuff bottles are pot-shaped and called snuff bottles (bienko) in China.
This exhibition will introduce the history of snuff tobacco through documents and paintings, along with displaying a variety of snuff containers that are also valued as works of art.
